Resources and links for vaginitis and vaginal atrophy
Vaginitis is a general term indicating irritation or infection of the vaginal area. Vaginitis is common and affects many millions of women each year. There are many types of vaginitis. The most common types are bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, protozoan (trichomaniasis - STD), and atrophic vaginitis. Medical consultation is critical to assess the type of infection and receive the appropriate treatment.
Vaginal atrophy is caused from an inflammation of the vagina due to diminishing estrogen levels resulting in thinning and shrinking tissues and reduced lubrication of the vaginal walls. It is characterized by vaginal dryness, itching or burning, and painful sexual intercourse. It is also known as atrophic vaginitis.
Vaginitis and vaginal atrophy, like other pain causing conditions, may cause or contribute to problems with vaginismus and/or may coexist with vaginismus on an ongoing basis. As a result, women may need to address both conditions before they are able to fully restore pain-free intercourse.
